Mo Ibrahim is a Sudanese-born British mobile communications entrepreneur. Following the sale of his company, Celtel, in 2005 for $3.4 billion, he established the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to encourage better governance in Africa. As part of this work the Mo Ibrahim Foundation created the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, to evaluate the governance performance of African nations. In 2007 he initiated the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership with the goal of rewarding African heads of state who deliver security, health, education and economic development to their constituents and democratically transfer power to their successors. Ibrahim has also supported the UN's Broadband Commission for Digital Development.

It is tempting to claim that my material success was due to my hard work, intelligence or even genius. To be honest I don't think that I am much smarter or hardworking than my childhood friends and schoolmates. I have been lucky to have the support and sacrifice of my parents, lucky to have the opportunity to get academic and technical training in the UK and lucky to specialise in mobile technology just prior to the cellular revolution. To be repeatedly in the right place at the right time; that is the mother of all luck.
