Arlene Smith's father was the founder of Charles E. Smith Co., the Northern-Virginia commercial and residential real estate company that bears his name. Her husband, Robert P. Kogod, as co-CEO of the firm, along with her brother, Robert Smith, developed Crystal City, VA, the expansive commercial and residential complex across the Potomac River from of Washington, DC. In 2001 the company became part of Vornado Realty Trust, where Mr. Kogod has been a trustee since 2002. Mr. Kogod is also president of Charles E. Smith Management, a privately-owned investment firm. Major supporters of Israel and Jewish causes, the Kogod's are equally notable as contributors to Washington, DC-area institutions including Sidwell Friends School, American University (from which Mr. Kogod graduated in 1962) and the Smithsonian Institution.
