With a fabled £5,000 loan from his father to sell sneakers from the back of a van, Sir Thomas (Tom) Hunter has transformed himself and his family into one of the wealthiest in Scotland, and one of its most active philanthropists. Through his private equity firm, West Coast Capital, Hunter now has interests in real estate development, eCommerce and data analytics. In 2006 Hunter and the Clinton Foundation created the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative promoting sustainable growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Credited with coining the term "venture philanthropy," Hunter was knighted in 2005 for services to entrepreneurship and philanthropy, and in 2013 was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. Since 1998, Lady Marion Hunter has held the title of "the boss" at the Hunter Foundation, where she, her husband and son, Ewan, serve as trustees.
