Nandan Nilekani helped co-found Infosys - the Indian tech giant - in 1981, serving as CEO from 2002 to 2007. Nilekani left the company in 2009, but returned as non-executive chairman in 2017. Nilekani also served as a cabinet minister under India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, heading the Unique Identification Authority of India, the country's national ID initiative. He is author of two books: Imagining India and (with co-author Viral Shah) Rebooting India: Realizing a Billion Aspirations.

Rohini Nilekani is a former journalist with publications including Bombay Magazine, India Today, and the Times of India. In 2004 she founded and (until 2013) ran Pratham Books, a nonprofit publisher that distributes free books throughout India, including Nilekani's own children's stories written under the pseudonym Noni. In 1998, her novel, Stillborn, was published by Penguin Books; in 2011 Penguin also published Uncommon Ground, a nonfiction work based on her reporting as anchor of the 2008 Indian television program of the same name.

Past giving by the Nilekanis demonstrates an interest in addressing inequality by supporting child literacy, improving access to education, and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene.
